Vardhman Mahaveer Open University came into existence in the year 1987 as an institute for open learning in Rajasthan. The idea of ​​setting up an open university in the state of Rajasthan originated in the observations of the UGC committee headed by the Late Prof. G. Rama Reddy, which stated that the distance system in Rajasthan is well established and has the potential to be developed into a full-fledged open university.

VMOU Kota was established by merging two institutes of correspondence courses. The Institute of Correspondence Studies and Continuing Education Jaipur and the College of Correspondence Studies Udaipur were amalgamated to strengthen distance education resources and to provide equitable high-quality education to the people of the Rajasthan state.

Vardhman Mahaveer Open University was earlier known as Kota Open University but was renamed as Vardhman Mahaveer Open University on 21 September 2002 by the Government of Rajasthan through a gazette notification. The university is called “VMOU” in short by the students.

Purpose of Vardhman Mahaveer Open University Kota

The main objective of VMOU is to provide educational opportunities to a large section of the population, especially disadvantaged groups like SC/ST, people living in rural and remote areas, women, serving people, etc. The reason for this is that many such people around us want to study but cannot pursue regular courses for some reason, then Vardhman Mahaveer Open University is like a boon for them because these people can study only sitting at home from the university, they will only have to go to give examinations.
