Overview of VMOU
Vardhman Mahaveer Open University came into existence in the year 1987 as an institute for open learning in Rajasthan. The idea of setting up an open university in the state of Rajasthan originated in the observations of the UGC committee headed by the Late Prof. G. Rama Reddy, which stated that the distance system in Rajasthan is well established and has the potential to be developed into a full-fledged open university.
VMOU Kota was established by merging two institutes of correspondence courses. The Institute of Correspondence Studies and Continuing Education Jaipur and the College of Correspondence Studies Udaipur were amalgamated to strengthen distance education resources and to provide equitable high-quality education to the people of the Rajasthan state.
Vardhman Mahaveer Open University was earlier known as Kota Open University but was renamed as Vardhman Mahaveer Open University on 21 September 2002 by the Government of Rajasthan through a gazette notification. The university is called “VMOU” in short by the students.

Purpose of Vardhman Mahaveer Open University Kota
The main objective of VMOU is to provide educational opportunities to a large section of the population, especially disadvantaged groups like SC/ST, people living in rural and remote areas, women, serving people, etc. The reason for this is that many such people around us want to study but cannot pursue regular courses for some reason, then Vardhman Mahaveer Open University is like a boon for them because these people can study only sitting at home from the university, they will only have to go to give examinations.
Some of the functions to be performed by the University as per the Act are as follows:
- To provide distance education for imparting instruction and research in the branches of knowledge technology, business, and profession.
- to prescribe courses of study for degrees, diplomas, certificates, or for any other purpose.
- to conduct examinations and award degrees, diplomas, certificates, and other academic distinctions.
- To determine the method of the distance education system for organizing educational programs.
- To associate with other universities and institutions (especially with IGNOU) for the interlocking system in the field of distance education.
- to establish and confer fellowships, scholarships, and awards.
- To establish and maintain Regional Centers and Study Centers as institutional tools for carrying out distance education in the State.
- To give recognition to examinations, studies, and activities conducted by other universities, institutions, academic bodies, and organizations.
- To do all such acts as may be necessary and relevant to the attainment of the objects and objects of the University.
The Selection Procedure in VMOU
Vardhman Mahaveer Open University offers various courses for all students. Admission to the university is done through three processes –

Direct admission is given in most of the courses by Vardhman Mahaveer Open University. However, to take admission in some courses, students have to pass an entrance exam and due to the limited number of seats, admission is given based on a merit list. Courses with admission through the entrance exam are MBA, BEd, Ph.D., etc.

Students have to pay the fees for the course in which they take admission in the same year. Due to the flexibility in the timing of the courses, students after getting admission in these courses can participate in the examination in any year and give it in the next year also.
Scholarship Programs of VMOU
Students are also given admission through scholarship schemes by Vardhman Mahaveer Open University. Students can take advantage of scholarships offered by the state government or the government of India in various courses.
